Robert's Post:
I don't have much time on the computer, so I will have to keep things short.
The most surprising thing about being on the trail has been by far the people we have met. Out on the trail, the universal struggle among hikers to simply survive each day's hike garners a great sense of comradery. As a result, friendships are forged quickly, but it's more than that.
In large part, finishing the day's hike and gathering around the campfire to share experiences and struggles has become the highlight of almost everyday. Andrea and I have not camped "out in the bush" lately and have instead opted to stay at the shelters because we both enjoy the company of the people we have been hiking with. Overall, meeting all these great groups of people (the C&C duo, Mass Trio, Eh Team, B team, A&M boys, Wes & Travis, John & Julia, the Volunteer Family, and many more) have been my favorite part of the the trip.
In addition, we have had some really great experiences while on the trail. Recently, we went whitewater rafting. Andrea has been rafting before, but I never had. The river was relatively tame (Class 2's and 3's), but since we went without a guide that was probably about the right level.
On the river, I had a really fantastic time. It didn't take me long to figure out how to steer the raft and we hit almost every rapid we aimed for.
Then the best part was the end. Right at the end of the trip, there is a series of Class 3 rapids. I didn't manuever the boat through the rapids that well, and we hit the big, last one kind of sideways. The raft reared up on it's side at quite an angle and (this is the best part) Andrea fell out!
At first it was really kind of scary since she wasn't coming out of the water for a long time. She later told me she had been stuck underneath the raft, but she eventually popped up with only a mild look of panic across her face. I paddled over to her and pulled her up; all was well again.
She eventually forgave me....eventually.
Anyway, it was great fun. Will have to write more later. Got to go.
